Though attending a program like the Harvard Kennedy School’s Senior Executive Program for State and Local Officials isn’t in the cards for many of us, improving your leadership as Mr. Murphy did is within reach. Tips like those below can help:

  • View Leadership as a Skill

Once you understand that leadership is a skill, not something you’re born with, improving feels feasible. Like any other skill, leadership can be developed and mastered, and as you learn, your ability improves. When you stop thinking that you’re not meant to be a leader and understand that it’s only a matter of learning, your confidence might rise as well.

  • Find Your Leadership Style

Study different leadership styles and find one that suits you. Then, follow steps to perfecting that style of leadership. For example, Mr. Murphy is a servant leader. This means that he places serving his teams and organizations first. Such leaders value each person, act selflessly and hold themselves accountable alongside their teams.

Leaders like JJ Murphy of Hobbs, New Mexico, often devote hours of their free time to improving. From reading top leadership books to attending seminars or meeting with a mentor, every effort you make is a step in the right direction.
